The outdoor unit relies on capacitors and contactors to start the compressor and fan motors. When these components age, the system may hum but not start, or it may trip repeatedly. A failed start capacitor often produces a single click followed by silence, while a bad contactor can cause the unit to run erratically or not at all. These parts are relatively inexpensive, but testing and replacement should be handled by a qualified technician because the system stores voltage even when powered off.

Drain Line Blockage and Safety Shutdowns

Modern AC units have a float switch that shuts the system down if the condensate drain line becomes clogged. Algae, mold, and debris can block the line, causing water to back up and trigger the switch. You may notice water pooling near the indoor unit or a musty smell. Clearing the drain line with a wet-dry vacuum or a mixture of vinegar and water often resolves the issue, but persistent clogs can indicate a larger drain problem.

Preventive Steps to Keep the System Running

Regular maintenance reduces the odds of a sudden breakdown. Replace filters every one to three months, keep the area around the outdoor unit clear of debris and vegetation, and schedule a professional tune-up annually. During the tune-up, a technician will check refrigerant levels, inspect electrical connections, clean the condenser coils, and test the system controls, helping the unit run efficiently for another season.
