And they\u2019re likely to have a significant impact on the way we live our lives on the road.<\/p>\n<p>But beyond having the ability to take our hands off the wheel, what exactly does that mean? That\u2019s something Volvo aims to demonstrate with the debut of the Concept 26. The self-driving show car, the maker explains, offers a hint of \u201chow luxury autonomous cars will integrate into daily life.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34525\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34525\" style=\"width: 152px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/subscribe\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34525\" title=\"Subscribe 12\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Subscribe-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"152\" height=\"91\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedetroitbureau.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Subscribe-12.jpg 152w, https:\/\/thedetroitbureau.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Subscribe-12-150x91.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 152px) 100vw, 152px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34525\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Subscribe for Free!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cVolvo Concept 26 addresses the notion that driving can still be fun and liberating on the right day and on the right road,\u201d says Anders Tylman-Mikiewicz, the general manager of Volvo\u2019s Concept Center, where the prototype was developed.<\/p>\n<p>But on the wrong day or the wrong road, autonomous vehicles can ease the strain of the daily commute which, \u201cin many metro areas,\u201d he adds, \u201cis stressful, frustrating and even broken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Volvo suggests that autonomous vehicles could be considered \u201ctime machines,\u201d because they help regain the time a motorist might spend crawling along in traffic for more useful or relaxing purposes. The show car derives its name from the average 26 minutes a day drivers in traffic-snarled cities like Los Angeles waste each day to congestion \u2013 something that adds up to 100s of hours each year.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>(Consumers want advanced safety and autonomous driving tech, finds new study. <\/em><a href=\"\/2015\/11\/consumers-demanding-new-safety-and-autonomous-driving-features\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Click Here<\/span><\/a><em> to learn more.)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_101010\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101010\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Volvo-Concept-26-instrument-panel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-101010\" title=\"Volvo Concept 26 - instrument panel\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Volvo-Concept-26-instrument-panel-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-101010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The basic Volvo Concept 26 dashboard resembles that used for the new XC90 SUV.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are three different driving modes in the Volvo Concept 26:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drive \u2013 for those times when taking control is fun and relaxing;<\/li>\n<li>Create \u2013 when a motorist\u2019s time is freed up to read or work or simply check out what\u2019s on TV or the Internet; and<\/li>\n<li>Relax \u2013 for those moments when a driver might want to do nothing more than lay back and enjoy the ride.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To provide a driver those options, the Volvo Concept 26 is equipped with features such as a tablet computer built into the center console, a fold-away tray table and a 25-inch color monitor that pops out of the passenger-side dashboard.<\/p>\n<p>The Concept 26 shares the same new Scalable Product Architecture used for most of Volvo\u2019s future products, including its new XC90 SUV.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>(Volvo planning to add plug-in hybrid options across its product range. <\/em><a href=\"\/2015\/10\/volvo-adding-plug-ins-across-entire-range\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Click Here<\/span><\/a><em> for more.)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With its traditional focus on safety, the maker has taken a serious interest in autonomous vehicle technology and earlier this year announced plans to launch a pilot program on public roads near its headquarters in Gothenberg, Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it might want to test a road-going version of the Concept 26 remains to be seen. Until now, manufacturers have taken a more limited approach to self-driving technology, which would require a driver to be ready to regain control of the vehicle at a moment\u2019s notice. Most experts don\u2019t anticipate truly driverless technology to still be a couple decades off.
