Chicago ranked highest in the U.S. for speeding in a new study.

So, what does it take to get on this report’s good side? Fewer speeding tickets, driving citations, DUIs and accidents. In other words, these cities have a safe driving culture. These are places where drivers are less likely to, say, run a red light, use a cell phone while driving, or eat Chinese takeaway at highway speed.

Where are the metroplexes?

Remarkably, America’s biggest cities, such as Los Angeles, New York and Boston, don’t make the worst list, although Miami ranks as No. 32 worst city and Philadelphia ranks No. 35. Instead, Los Angeles ranks 35th for the best drivers. And that’s not surprising, given the amount of time they spend stuck in traffic.

On a state by state basis, Iowa ranks as the worst, followed by North Dakota, Virginia, California, Alaska, Utah, Idaho, New Jersey, Tennessee and Wisconsin. On the flip side, New Hampshire ranks as the best driving state, followed by West Virginia, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Illinois, Delaware, Louisiana, Michigan, Arizona and Connecticut.

The report’s rankings came from 2021 analysis of insurance quotes nationwide, ranking accidents, speeding tickets, DUIs, and citations. Cities considered the worst drivers had the highest rate of driving incidents.
