Toyota hopes to restart production at 14 of its domestic Japanese factories Wednesday after a key supplier was hit by a hacker attack that has led some government officials to question whether Russians were involved.

The attack came shortly after Japanese leaders joined an expanding coalition enacting sanctions against Russia due to its attack on Ukraine. The hack impacts a third of Toyota’s global production, and it raises concerns that Russian hackers could take aim at a variety of targets in countries that have enacted sanctions in response to the Ukraine war.

All told, 28 production lines at 14 factories were impacted starting Monday. The automaker estimated it lost production of about 13,000 vehicles when the supplier of plastic parts and electronic components was hit by the attack.

Mysterious message

The first sign of trouble came Saturday night when Kojima Industries Corp. discovered errors on a file server. It attempted to reboot and correct the problem but discovered a threatening message which, according to Reuters, was written in English.

The attack came shortly after Japan agreed to join the U.S. and numerous other countries in enacting sanctions against Russia for its attack on Ukraine. After being advised of the hack, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida ordered an investigation.

“It is difficult to say whether this has anything to do with Russia before making thorough checks,” he told reporters.

Not the first time

Toyota has been hacked on a number of other occasions, including one instance in 2019 where the personal data of millions of customers was released. That scam reportedly cost the company $37 million. Another attack targeting a U.S. parts subsidiary in 2021, was widely believed to have been perpetrated by Russia, which maintains a large force of hackers who target private industry, government organizations and public infrastructure.

Other automakers, including Honda, have been hit by attacks in recent years.

The loss of production is especially problematic at a time when Toyota and other automakers have been struggling to cope with an ongoing shortage of semiconductors. That led global industry production to fall millions of vehicles short last year, consultancy AlixPartners estimating manufacturers lost about $210 billion in revenues.

Toyota already had to reduce worldwide production plans for February by 150,000 vehicles due to the chip shortage, including as many as 35,000 from U.S. plants. It then was hit by the Canadian trucker’s blockade which briefly impacted production at five factories across North America. All told, the automaker’s U.S. dealers have less than a 10-day supply of vehicles in inventory, compared to an industry norm of around 65 days.

No surprise

The fact that Toyota was hit through a supplier came as no surprise to Slava Bronfman, CEO and co-founder at Cybellum, an automotive cyber security company.

“Supply chain issues are already one of the weakest links for an organization, even in the best of times,” said Bronfman. “The challenges are not just in how they impact production capabilities, but also in how they affect the security of the final product.”

Bronfman and other cybersecurity experts worry hackers won’t just target supplier and assembly plants but electronic systems within vehicles. Among the concerns, this could later allow hackers to damage vehicles or even trigger ransomware that would shut down a vehicle unless a ransom were paid.
