Chevrolet reveals its first pursuit-rated Silverado.

Chevrolet announced Wednesday the debut of the its first pursuit-rated Silverado, joining the Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle that the company has produced for 25 years. The 2023 Silverado Police Pursuit Vehicle is based on the crew-cab, short-bed, four-wheel drive truck.

“Our 25 years of engineering Tahoe police pursuit vehicles coupled with Chevrolet’s 100 years of truck success, puts us in a great position to deliver a truly capable Silverado PPV,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of GM Fleet.

Police pickup trucks my seem odd, but they provide all-weather capability, lots of room for cop gear and sufficient space for perps.

Part of Chevrolet’s fleet line-up

The new Silverado PPV is a natural extension of Chevrolet’s law enforcement offerings given it shares its mechanicals with the Tahoe, a vehicle used by police departments for the past 25 years. But in recent years, it has been the sole offering even as Dodge offers the Charger sedan and Durango SUV police vehicles, and Ford offers the Explorer, F-150 and, since September, the Mustang Mach-E.

For 2022, Michigan State Police tests show that the Tahoe was competitive, but at the slower end of acceleration runs, although its braking ability was among the best.

So, what’s under the hood?

No surprises here: the same 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V-8 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission that sees duty in the Tahoe PPV can also be found in the Silverado PPV. It’s also fitted with six-piston Brembo brake front calipers with 16-inch rotors, a heavy-duty engine air filter a certified speedometer, 20-inch black steel wheels and 20-inch Goodyear all-terrain speed-rated tires.

Michigan State Police tests show the Silverado PPV reaches 60 mph in 7.65 seconds with rear-wheel drive, 7.95 seconds with all-wheel drive. That’s comparable to the Ford Police Interceptor Utility’s 7.79 seconds when equipped with the base 3.5-liter V-6, but slower than the Ford’s 5.45 seconds when equipped with the EcoBoost V-6.

Chevrolet says the Silverado’s “impressive” turning radius is 46.9 feet, and it can tow up to 9,300 pounds.

And for those departments when going off-road is a fact-of-life, the Silverado PPV gets Chevy’s Z71 off-road package with Rancho shocks, locking rear differential and a skid plate. A two-inch lift is optional, providing 11.35-inches of ground clearance.

Driver assistance gear includes Chevrolet Safety Assist package features Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, Following Distance Indicator, Automatic Emergency Braking and Front Pedestrian Braking. IntelliBeam headlamps, Adaptive cruise control, Rear Park Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert with Rear Cross Traffic Braking, and Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert are available.

Made to be outfitted

The Silverado is built to be outfitted, with auxiliary wiring circuits for installation of wiring to connect the truck’s horn and siren. Chevrolet also installs a Surveillance Mode circuit that allows for installation of controls for the truck’s exterior and interior lighting. Five upfitter switches are installed for the most frequently used controls, a front center seat delete option, and the choice of LED or halogen headlamps.

Inside, you’ll find remote keyless entry, push button starter and a column shifter. Power cloth front seats are available, rear seats are heavy-duty vinyl, as is the flooring, a 220-amp alternator and two 120-volt outlets. An optional upfitter switch bank provides three 30-amp and two 20-amp circuits for emergency equipment.

The 5-foot 8-inch truck bed comes with 12 welded tie-downs hooks, a corner-step rear bumper and an optional multi-flex tailgate and optional hard folding tonneau cover.

Will it be enough to gain market share from Ford?

"All-Electric
The Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV is after and more fuel-efficient than the Chevy in Michigan State Police’s 2022 Model Year Police Evaluation.

Ford police vehicles account for roughly two-thirds of the police vehicle market in the United States, with roughly half being the Police Interceptor Utility, a law enforcement version of the Ford Explorer.

And only Ford offers fuel-efficient hybrids that can help a department save on fuel costs. With the addition of the Mustang Mach-E, those costs could plummet even further. And the Mach-E’s performance in Michigan State Police tests suggest it’s the best performing cop car available.

In January, New York City plans to spend $11.5 million to purchase 184 Mustang Mach-E battery-electric vehicles for use by its police and various emergency response departments.

And Ford is aggressive in protecting their market share by adding features that officers will appreciate. In 2020, the company added software to its Police Interceptor Utility that uses the vehicle’s powertrain and climate control systems to heat the passenger compartment to 133° Fahrenheit for 15 minutes. That’s enough to reduces the viral concentration of COVID-19 by more than 99% on interior surfaces, according to Ohio State University research.

But Chevrolet is looking to cut into Ford’s lead. While the automaker didn’t release pricing for the new vehicle, look for the 2023 Silverado Police Pursuit Vehicle to become available in late summer 2022.
